A St. Helens man has pleaded guilty to assault and reckless driving after he crashed into a tree while racing in Portland.

The St. Helens Spotlight reports that on May 27th 2023, officers responded to the crash on North Marine Drive, a street known for illegal racing. There, they found a destroyed car, the driver, Ivan Savitskiy, and his brother, Andrey Savitskiy; both were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

While in the hospital, Ivan Savitskiy claimed to police that he had just been cruising at 60 miles per hour when a car pulled out in front of him, causing him to lose control. However, data from the car showed that he had actually been going more than 140 miles per hour.

Ivan Savitskiy has been convicted of reckless driving and second-degree assault. He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 17th.
