March 3, 2025The Mount St. Helens Institute is reaching out to the community for support in maintaining its programs and ensuring public safety at the Mount St. Helens National Monument, this comes ahead of cuts to U.S. Forest Service staffing and funding.
Around 10% of the Institute’s funding comes from the U.S. Forest Service, and the organization is preparing for potential disruptions to its volunteer programs, science education initiatives, and public safety efforts. While the full effects of these cuts are still unclear, the Institute anticipates a decrease in available rangers.
The Mount St. Helens Institute is asking visitors to remain patient and considerate toward the remaining staff. They are currently reviewing their priorities for 2025 and beyond to maintain essential programs and address immediate needs.
To help sustain these efforts, the Institute encourages community members to support the organization and the Mount St. Helens Volcanic Monument by donating, volunteering for the summer season, and reaching out to legislators to advocate for stable funding and staffing for public lands and the organizations that support them.
