April 4, 2025A significant development has emerged in the Winlock Double Homicide case from February. 35-year-old Robert Chandler of Toledo has had his trial delayed until at least June 26th. This decision follows a competency evaluation that determined Chandler is currently unable to understand the charges against him or participate in his defense.
Chandler was charged on March 10 with two counts of first-degree aggravated murder in connection with the brutal killings, which involved two swords. On March 14, a judge ordered a competency evaluation.
According to The Daily Chronicle, a psychologist and forensic evaluator from the state Department of Health and Social Services completed Chandler’s evaluation. The evaluation revealed that Chandler has been diagnosed with “unspecified schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorder,” along with “methamphetamine use disorder” and “inhalant use disorder.”
When questioned about his understanding of the case, Chandler reportedly “expressly denied having committed the alleged offenses” and went on to make confusing and illogical statements regarding the reasons behind his arrest. He claimed that he was being “targeted by police who had previously ‘suffocated’ him” and asserted that he could “control the outcome” of his case. According to Chandler, this would happen by causing cancer cells to grow in his body, a process he believed would kill him and trigger the beginning of the Rapture.
This is not the first time Chandler has undergone competency treatment. In January 2022, he spent 45 days receiving competency restoration treatment, during which he responded positively to psychotropic medication and was eventually restored to competency.
