Crews are continuing to struggle to get a handle on the lightning-caused Backbone Fire, about 7 miles northeast of Packwood. The flames originally broke out on August 5th, and as of the latest update, the fire is 17 acres in size and still 0% contained.
In a release yesterday, officials said suppression efforts continue to protect the Packwood and Randle communities. Currently, no property is under immediate threat.
The blaze is burning on steep, difficult-to-access terrain.
