Tonight, the Longview City Council will meet, and the agenda includes the approval of a new contract with Waste Control and further talk about a new sales tax that would replace vehicle licensing fees in the city.
There will be a public hearing on a new 10-year garbage and recycling contract with Waste Control.
The new agreement would take effect December 1st, replacing the current contract before it was set to expire in April 2027. It would shift billing, customer service, and service-level changes from the city to Waste Control.
The contract would also tie garbage rates to state-regulated WUTC rates. Residents could see an overall increase of about $20 to $23 per month for garbage and recycling services, phased in with increases in 2027 and 2028.
There will also be a public hearing on a proposal to change how the city’s Transportation Benefit District raises money for transportation projects. The proposal would add a 0.1 percent sales and use tax within Longview, expected to generate about $1.3 million a year, while cutting the annual vehicle license fee.
The sales tax would remain in effect for 10 years, through December 2036. The council is scheduled to vote after the public hearing.
Tonight’s meeting is at 6 p.m. in the Longview City Council Chambers.
