April 9, 2025The Washington State Patrol cancelled the Silver (missing person) Alert for 62-year-old Dean Kirby of Kelso yesterday afternoon. One minute later, the Kelso Police Department (KPD) sent out a press release about the discovery of Kirby’s vehicle, and an unidentified deceased person, on Sunday afternoon.
At about 4:45, Kirby’s gray 2016 Mazda was found by Weyerhaeuser security on a property of theirs at the end of Ostrander Road in Kelso. The vehicle was slightly off the remote road, locked, unoccupied, and reportedly appeared to have been there for some time. When Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to the scene, their preliminary search was unsuccessful. On Monday morning CCSO reconvened with the KPD, and Cowlitz County Search & Rescue to search the heavily-wooded area again.
Then at about 11:45am, the deceased body of an unidentified male was found about a mile away from Kirby’s vehicle. The Kelso Police Department states there is no evidence suggesting there is any danger to the public related to this discovery.
Captain Mark Berglund of the Kelso Police Department told KLOG news despite the cancelation of the Silver Alert, his department could neither confirm or deny the identity of the body, and that the Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office would come out with further information within a few days.
