March 12, 2025A suspect was arrested in West Kelso after a standoff with the Lower Columbia SWAT Team Sunday night.
Captain Brandon McNew of the Longview Police Department reports that Street Crimes detectives were conducting surveillance near the Cowlitz Way Bridge around 11:30 p.m. During the operation, they observed 31-year-old Zachary Hochstetler of Longview enter the garage of a residence on the 300 block of NW 3rd Avenue.
Hochstetler was known to have multiple local felony warrants for his arrest. Detectives notified backup and surrounded the residence. Patrol units made multiple announcements on their PA system for Hochstetler to come out, but he refused.
He was known to have a history of violent crimes, was believed to possibly have access to weapons, and had previously resisted law enforcement, so the Lower Columbia SWAT Team was called to assist. When they arrived and took control of the situation, Hochstetler still refused to surrender.
After about five hours of the standoff, he was observed inside, and chemical munitions were deployed into the building. After that, he surrendered and was taken into custody, then booked into the Cowlitz County Jail around 5 a.m.
