Local and state authorities have partnered to investigate an unidentified woman who was killed back in the early 1990s.

The Washington State Patrol, Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office, and King County Medical Examiner’s Office say that the woman, nicknamed “Helen Doe,” was killed in a crash on May 14th, 1991, on Interstate 5 in Kalama.

A southbound tractor-trailer struck the back of a vehicle on the freeway, causing a fire that consumed the cab and took the lives of both the driver and passenger. Investigators traced the truck’s route using fuel receipts, showing the driver left Missouri a week earlier and had dropped off a load in Oregon, then headed toward Portland. The driver was known to pick up hitchhikers, but no one knew a passenger had been in the truck that day.

Her remains were found at the scene, but they were unrecognizable. It’s believed that Helen Doe was a white and/or Indigenous woman, between the ages of 20 and 29 years old. She was between 5 feet and 5 feet 4 inches tall, around 115 pounds, had brown hair, high cheekbones, a dark complexion, severe scoliosis that caused a visibly curved spine to the right, poor dental health with a gap in her front bottom teeth, and a tattoo of the letter “S” on the left side of her chest.

She had on a black cowboy vest over a gray and possibly pink top. If you even remotely recognize this woman, please contact authorities immediately.
