February 26, 2025The Longview School District has made a change to its sexual harassment policies, voting 3-2 to revert to its previous policy following a federal court ruling.
The school board announced that the district is returning to the 2020 version of Policy 3205 after a federal judge overturned expanded protections for students under Title IX rules last month. As this was the district’s prior policy, board member Crystal Moldenhauer recommended passing the change on the first reading without further discussion, a suggestion the board ultimately agreed to.
The two votes against the change came from board members Jennifer Leach and Barb Westrick. Westrick expressed that she wanted more details on the court case before making the change and that she believed the policy adopted in November had some good changes.
Board president Don Wiitala explained that the decision to revert was made following legal advice from the district’s attorney, the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Washington State School Directors Association.
