March 7, 2025One man died and five other people have been displaced after a two-alarm house fire yesterday morning to the west of the Three Rivers Mall in Kelso.
At 10:42 a.m., crews from Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue and other agencies responded to the 100 block of South 6th Avenue after a 911 caller reported that their neighbor’s house was on fire. While crews were en route, dispatch was also informed that someone was trapped in the garage.
Upon arrival, it was reported that a single-story home and a detached garage were both well involved in flames. Firefighters searched the home and garage while also working to put out the blaze. The fire was extinguished by around 10:55 a.m.
The man was found dead in the garage. The Kelso Police Department and Cowlitz County Coroner’s Office are conducting the investigation into his death. As of now, he has not been publicly identified.
Fire investigators say they believe the fire was accidentally caused by a portable electric heater. The five other residents of the home, three adults and two children, are displaced and receiving temporary housing through the American Red Cross. Damages are estimated at $175,000.
