William Elsworth Pontious: September 27, 1939 — August 21, 2026
LONGVIEW- William Elsworth “Bill” Pontious passed away on August 21, 2026, in Kelso, Washington, after a long illness at his assisted care facility. He was born on September 27, 1939, in Ryderwood, Washington.
Bill graduated from R.A. Long High School in Longview in 1957 and, after high school, entered the Marine Corps. Throughout his life, he was known as a thoughtful and social man who reached out to others, especially those who were housebound. He was also a longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Longview Pioneer Lions Club.
Bill loved to build things, and some of his proudest accomplishments reflected both his creativity and determination. He designed and remodeled the family’s 1923 Long-Bell home, a project that spoke to his vision and skill. He also built a covered wagon from an airline baggage cart, a memorable accomplishment that captured his ingenuity. He especially enjoyed having his grandchildren alongside him as he worked, sharing not only his projects but his time and attention.
Before his recent illness, Bill spent many happy hours traveling and sailing with his good friend, Ron Stoppler. He will also be remembered for his lively spirit; those who knew him often said he was someone who could really make an entrance. Above all, Bill cared deeply about his family and truly loved being a grandpa.
Survivors include wife Janet Henning-Pontious, son Ryan Pontious (Sylena), daughter Shannon Garner (Brett), Step-daughter Ruthann Brown, step-son Scott Henning (Mandy), 9 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, 2 sisters, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Pontious; his mother, Christine Pontious; his son, Tim Pontious; his sister, Carolyn Pontious; and his special friend, Ron Stoppler.
A memorial service will be held on September 26, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Steele Chapel, 5050 Mt. Solo Rd., Longview, Washington 98632.
Bill’s life was marked by service, craftsmanship, friendship, and devotion to family. He leaves behind many treasured memories and the lasting example of a man who built generously, welcomed others warmly, and loved his family with all his heart.
