After over half a year of drama, Longview Schools Superintendent Karen Cloninger has officially been fired from her position.
The Longview School Board of Directors held a special meeting yesterday to consider whether there was probable cause to discharge Cloninger and terminate her employment contract. After over 2 and a half hours of executive session, they came back and voted unanimously to do just that on the grounds of insubordination. Board Vice President Jennifer Leach made the motion, stating that Cloninger had refused to comply with written directives from the district once in May and twice in September to participate in the district employment investigation, including an interview scheduled in October.
Director Barb Westrick spoke, saying she believed it was the duty and responsibility of Cloninger to participate in the interview that the district had required. Director Susan Donahue also said that she believed that was a requirement.
The firing came after last week, when it was announced that Cloninger was suing two school board members, the interim Superintendent, and the district. The suit claims wrongful termination and that she was used as a “scapegoat” in the rape case involving students from the Mark Morris Boys basketball team.
