Gary Dale Pritchard: April 17, 1953 – August 18, 2026
LONGVIEW- Gary Dale Pritchard, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2026, after a long and courageous illness. Born on April 17, 1953, in Longview, Washington, Gary was a beacon of kindness and warmth throughout his life, touching the hearts of everyone he met.
The son of Jack and Betty Pritchard and 1 of 7 children, Gary grew up with a strong sense of family and community. He graduated from Mark Morris High School in 1971 and soon after enlisted in the Navy, where he was stationed on the USS Prairie in San Diego, California. His sense of duty and service to others was evident early on and remained constant throughout his life.
After being discharged, Gary moved to Seaside, Oregon, where he met the love of his life, Darcel Arnold. Their love story blossomed, and they moved to Kirkland, where they wed in an intimate ceremony in Seattle on November 18, 1978. Together, they shared nearly 48 beautiful years, filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
After returning to Longview in 1985, Gary worked as a dedicated fuel delivery driver for Wilcox & Flegel for 34 years, contributing to his community with the same dedication he showed in all areas of life. A proud member of Calvary Community Church, Gary’s faith was a guiding force, inspiring him to help others selflessly. He and Darcel spent many Saturdays feeding those in need at Community House through Love Inc., a testament to their boundless generosity and compassion.
Gary’s life was rich with adventure and joy. An outdoor enthusiast, he relished summers boating on the Columbia River, camping trips across Southwest Washington, and family vacations to California and the Oregon Coast. In retirement, he embraced his passion for travel and music, creating precious memories with Darcel as they kayaked, traveled, and attended concerts. His frequent trips to Bellingham to visit his children and grandchildren were especially dear to him.
Known for his infectious sense of humor, Gary was a friend to all. He was always the first to lend a hand, never expecting anything in return. His family and friends knew him as the person to call for advice, and his grandchildren—Roman, Finn, Stella, and Henley—felt his love deeply, which they will carry with them forever.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife Darcel, daughter Melissa and her husband Sam, son Jason Boland and his wife Stephanie, daughter-in-law Erin Pritchard, his grandchildren, siblings Mike (Teri) Pritchard, Marcia Huycke, Darlene (Ty) Chriest, and Bill (Nancy) Pritchard, and many nieces and nephews. His sweet dog Tucker, a constant companion, also survives him.
He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Betty, siblings Steve and Janice and his son Benjamin. We find peace and comfort that they are reunited.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported them during this difficult time. Your kindness and compassion have been a source of comfort and strength. As an act of remembrance of Gary, reach out to a loved one, help a neighbor, and let those around you know you love them. Gary’s generosity continued even in passing. Through his decision to be an organ donor, his family was told 2 individuals were given the restoration of sight.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on October 3, 2026, from 2pm – 5pm at the Event Center at Cowlitz County Fairgrounds, located at 1905 7th Avenue, Longview, Washington. Casual dress welcome and a selection of light refreshments will be served.
As we remember Gary, let us reflect on his favorite scripture, which perfectly encapsulates his life: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
