A Portland man was injured in a crash just after midnight this morning on southbound Interstate 5, south of Kalama.

The crash was reported at 12:26 a.m., and emergency responders arrived on the scene at milepost 27 near Todd Road shortly afterward. There, they found 66-year-old Vernon Schletzbaum of Portland injured. He was transported to St. John Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.

According to the Washington State Patrol report, Schletzbaum had been traveling northbound when he lost control of his vehicle. He crossed into the southbound lanes and collided with a 2007 Toyota Yaris driven by 42-year-old Dennis Clark.

Clark was not injured. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, and no drugs or alcohol were involved. The crash was caused by Schletzbaum overcorrecting.
