ST. HELENS- Percy “Doc” Smith of St. Helens, Oregon passed away at his home on March 9, 2025, at the age of 97. He was born March 3, 1928, in St. Helens, Oregon to Oliver and Hannah (Rathbun) Smith. He grew up and attended school in the area until his father tragically died, and Percy had to leave school and go to work to help support his mom and the family.
In 1950, Percy married his first wife Donna Allen. They had 4 children and were married for 50 years before her passing in March of 2000. In October of 2002, Percy married Marian Lundberg and they enjoyed 23 years together.
Percy worked as a fire fighter for the St. Helens Fire Department for many years. When he wasn’t on shift he also worked in maintenance at Jordan Motor Company and Emmert Motors; he also became a handyman after retiring. He volunteered at Habitat for Humanity restoring old furniture – he could fix anything. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the RV travel club The Hay Riders, and the Small Woodsman Club.
He is survived by his wife, Marian Smith; his children: Karen, Gwen, David, and Larry; step children: Catherine, Sara, Doreen, Judi, and Rick; grandchildren: Jeff, Betsy, Taryn, Kelsey, Gary, Lucas, and Jessica; and many step grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Betty.
