June 23, 2025Several local politicians are under investigation for possible violations of Washington’s Open Public Records Act.
Independent journalist Andre Stepankowsky of Lower Columbia Currents reports the Clark County Sheriff’s Office is currently looking into complaints involving three Longview City Council members—Mayor Spencer Boudreau, Kalei LaFave, and Eric Halvorson—as well as State Senator Jeff Wilson. The investigation stems from allegations that they may have failed to properly comply with public records requests.
Stepankowsky says that the investigation was launched following complaints filed by Longview resident Thomas Samuels. Samuels initially submitted the complaints last spring to Cowlitz County Sheriff Brad Thurman and Longview Police Chief Robert Huhta, but the case was transferred to Clark County to avoid conflicts of interest.
The complaints allege that the officials failed to produce all required records in response to Samuels’ requests. Wilson, LaFave, and Halvorson reportedly cited issues with their cell phones at the time, which prevented them from fully disclosing the public records.
