Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal, says he will challenge President Donald Trump in order to protect transgender students.Reykdal’s announcement comes in response to an executive order made by Trump on Wednesday that bars transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports. Reykdal claims this is another federal attempt to take control of local school districts and states.

Reykdal said Trump is attempting to “withhold federal funds from school districts that do not comply with these discriminatory actions.” He added that the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is working with the state Attorney General’s Office on the next steps for the state’s school districts. He claims that Trump’s order is unlawful.
