Two women had to be hospitalized early Saturday morning after a crash on Interstate 5 in Kalama.

The Washington State Patrol’s Office says that 45-year-old Sarah Huffman of Kelso was heading northbound around 5:50 a.m. near Exit 30 in downtown Kalama when she reportedly fell asleep. Her 2009 Mazda 3 hit a 2008 Ford Focus driven by 66-year-old Faith Wright of Kalama, and Wright then went into the guardrail.

Both women were taken from the scene by ambulance to St. John Medical Center. They both had been wearing seatbelts, and drugs or alcohol were not believed to be involved. The crash does, however, remain under investigation.
