February 26, 2025If you’ve recently visited downtown Longview, you may have noticed some changes aimed at improving safety. The city has completed safety upgrades at 17 intersections to better serve pedestrians, drivers, and local businesses.
The project, which began in July, included the installation of new pedestrian signals at 11 intersections and modernized traffic signal control equipment at 17 locations. These enhancements are designed to make it easier and safer for everyone navigating through the area.
Levi Lindeman, Project Engineer, commented, “These upgrades have significantly improved pedestrian safety in downtown Longview. The new signal timing and equipment improvements ensure better visibility and control, making intersections safer for all.”
The safety improvements were spread across various streets, with four upgrades on 14th Avenue, six on Commerce Avenue, six on 12th Avenue, and one on 11th Avenue. Additionally, the project added eight new pedestrian signal poles and 87 pedestrian signals, boosting both visibility and safety for pedestrians.
These improvements are part of a larger citywide effort to enhance pedestrian safety. In 2022, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) launched its City Safety Grant Program, aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on city streets. Longview partnered with PBS Engineering to assess traffic patterns and determine the most effective improvements.
Thanks to full federal funding, these upgrades were completed at no cost to local taxpayers.
