Skamania County Search and Rescue was devastated at the end of last year after a three-day search mission, during which two Portland men were found dead and their gear was stolen.

The nonprofit does not receive any state funding, so they had to look to the community for help. Now, they report that around 1,000 people donated in to raise $74,000 on GoFundMe to replace the lifesaving equipment that was lost.

The leader of the Skamania Search and Rescue drone team, Serge Newberry, said, “We exist to rescue people when they need us most, but in our time of need, the community really rescued us, and we’ll never forget that.”
