The Oregon State Police have posted further details on that fatal crash Monday evening on Highway 30 near Scappoose.
The two-vehicle collision occurred just a bit after 6 p.m., right across the Columbia and Multnomah County line, near milepost 30 of the highway. The State Police say that a preliminary investigation indicated that a green Subaru Outback driven by 48-year-old Christopher Matteson of Columbia City was traveling westbound on Highway 30 when, for reasons unclear, he crossed into the eastbound lanes and struck a red Volkswagen Bug, operated by 57-year-old Rachel Mitchell, head-on.
Mitchell was declared dead at the scene. Matteson sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital.
The collision impacted the highway for around six hours as authorities investigated.
