Toutle Lake could potentially be joining a growing trend of smaller schools transitioning to a four-day school week.
The Toutle Lake School District put out a letter this week saying that, as they navigate significant financial challenges, they are committed to exploring innovative ways to maintain high-quality education.
At this time, no decision has been made. However, they are in the “information-gathering phase” of determining whether a four-day work week could be a viable option for students, staff, families, and the community.
The district says the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, or OSPI, currently limits the state to just 30 districts that can operate under a four-day week, and only three waivers are currently available. If they choose to pursue that option, an application would need to be submitted to OSPI by April 30th, with a decision expected by June 5th.
Toutle Lake says it is important to know that a four-day week does not reduce the amount of instructional hours students receive. Rather, under the four-day structure, school days are just lengthened.
The district plans to ensure a thorough and transparent review process with a diverse committee of school staff, parents, community members, and students.
Potential savings from the change could result from reduced transportation expenses, lower utility costs, decreased custodial and operational expenditures, and more efficient use of district resources.
More details are available on the school’s facebook page.
