September 11, 2025More than 100 people gathered Wednesday evening at Longview’s Civic Circle for a vigil following the assassination of political commentator Charlie Kirk in Utah.
The event included speeches, prayers, the Pledge of Allegiance, and calls for an end to political violence.
The vigil had one arrest. Longview Police Captain Brandon McNew said officers responded around 8:04 p.m. to a reported disturbance. They found a man, later identified as John Erik Hughest Hegstad, standing in the bed of his truck in the City Hall parking lot and using a loudspeaker to shout at participants.
Witnesses reported Hegstad yelled profanities and inflammatory comments, referring to attendees as “Nazis” and “white supremacists.” He was arrested for disorderly conduct.
During a follow-up investigation, officers learned Hegstad allegedly confronted an attendee physically. Multiple witnesses said that during a verbal altercation, he chest-bumped a woman who was trying to de-escalate the situation. He was also charged with fourth-degree assault.
