April 1, 2025Passenger trains will once again be running through the Kelso train station, as Amtrak Cascades has announced it will restore train service this week. This follows the nationwide pull of all Horizon passenger cars last week due to corrosion issues.
The corrosion left the Cascades line with only one functioning train, forcing Amtrak to replace all scheduled trips with bus service, except for one daily roundtrip between Seattle and Eugene.
Amtrak has started replacing Amfleet cars from various locations across the country to the Pacific Northwest to replace the Horizon cars. The first five Amfleet cars arrived in Seattle yesterday. Train service restoration will begin today with Cascades trains 516 and 519.
Additional cars will continue to arrive later this week and will help restore daily train service for trains 517, 506, and 505 between Seattle and Portland, as well as train 518 between Portland and Vancouver, B.C.
However, Amtrak Cascades has stated that some trains may be shorter than usual, with as little as half the normal seating capacity available for the time being.
