April 28, 2025There was a house fire off Taylor Avenue in Longview yesterday morning that sent a firefighter to the hospital.
The Longview Fire Department was dispatched to 2536 Taylor Avenue near John Null Park around 10:09 a.m. The fire was located in the attic, and smoke could be seen coming from the roof of a small, single-story home.
Firefighters initiated an interior attack and quickly brought the fire under control. Battalion Chief Eric Koreis said crews conducted extensive overhaul operations and applied Class A foam to the attic insulation to minimize the risk of rekindling. Koreis said that blown-in insulation presents a unique risk for firefighters because hidden smoldering pockets can remain deep within the material.
Firefighters remained on scene throughout the day for fire watch. Around 1:19 p.m., light smoke was detected, prompting fire crews to return. Using thermal imaging, crews located residual heat, pulled ceiling materials in the dining and kitchen areas, and fully extinguished the hot spots.
During firefighting operations, one firefighter operating in the attic over the garage fell through the weakened ceiling. The firefighter fell approximately 10 to 12 feet onto a plastic storage tote and the concrete garage floor. They were transported to St. John Medical Center and were released the same day without serious injuries. They are expected to return to full duty on May 3.
