March 26, 2025CC Coroner’s Office Identifies Man Killed in Kelso 6th Avenue Fire—Klog 100.7 News
March 27, 2025You may notice that flags in the city of Kelso are at half-mast today in honor of Kelso Police Officer Francis Konen, who was killed in the line of duty 70 years ago today.
Officer Konen had responded to a domestic disturbance at a Kelso hotel with two other officers. After assessing that there was no further need for three officers on the scene, Konen was left alone to complete the investigation. During this time, the male suspect returned, assaulted Konen, and gained control of his service weapon, shooting him.
Despite his injuries, Konen was able to subdue and restrain the suspect until backup arrived. He later died from his wounds, leaving behind a wife and young son.
The suspect was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 99 years in prison, but was paroled after just 12 years.
In 1998, Officer Konen was posthumously awarded the Washington State Law Enforcement Medal of Honor. His name is inscribed on both the Washington State Law Enforcement Memorial in Olympia and the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.
