I-5 Mishap--
A truck driver from Marysville is nursing some cuts and bruises after a tree fell onto his rig last night near Centralia, knocking him out while at the wheel. The State Patrol says this happened at about 9:50 pm, as William McDaniel, 55, was southbound at milepost 85 on the freeway. Troopers say a large tree fell onto the freeway, and McDaniel was unable to stop before he hit that tree. A large branch came into the truck, hitting McDaniel in the head and knocking him out. The tree blocked both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of the freeway for about 20 minutes; it took about a little more than a half-hour to get the tree completely out of the freeway. McDaniel was treated on the scene; no citations were issued.

Wanted Man--
As Deputies investigated some cars that were parked in the wrong place, they came upon a man who was wanted in eastern Oregon on a felony warrant. Around 5:30 pm, Deputies spotted a pickup and another car that were parked in the landscaping of an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Ocean Beach Highway. They contacted Jeramy Gordon Foley, 21, of Longview, who was the driver of the car that was parked in the landscaping. When Deputies checked Foley's ID, they found a ten thousand-dollar fugitive warrant from Hermiston, Oregon. Foley was arrested without incident, and is now awaiting transfer to Umatilla County.

Town Hall--
It was a short and sweet County Commissioners Town Hall meeting last night in Toutle, lasting only about 45 minutes, with a dozen people in attendance. The big item of business was the interviewing and selection of a new member of the Silver Lake Flood Control District Board of Directors. Dan Belding was chosen over Del Gilkerson; Belding says that he wants to continue the work that his family has been working on for years.....The opening on the board occurred when Chet Coleman resigned; the panel has had its share of trouble in recent months, dealing with reports of records mismanagement, improper use of funds and lax management of the structures that the board is in charge of. Belding says that the board is "disorganized and dysfunctional," but he thinks that he can help to restore order. In other topics, the Commissioners outlined the speed zones on Silver Lake, and re-stated the rules about where water-skiing is allowed. Maps of the lake's no-wake zones and skiing areas are now available at Drew's Grocery and on the county website. They also talked about the upcoming dedication of Harry Gardner Park near Toutle. That event is now planned for noon on Friday, August 8th.

Lexington Ground Breaking--
A ceremony is planned at noon today up in Lexington, as the principals of the Lexington Marketplace project hold a ground breaking event. The principals of the Lands End group say that this will be a mixed-use development that will be built in six phases, with both retail space and office condominiums. Spaces available will range from 1,250 square feet to 80,000 square feet. Leasing is being handled by Grubb and Ellis of Seattle, and the general contractor for the project is Longview-based PNE Corporation. Today's ground-breaking will be held at noon, at the corner of Solomon Road and West Side Highway.

Speed Slowdown--
City of Woodland officials are hoping that safety can be improved on a stretch of highway east of the Intermediate School, as they lower the speed limit from 50 to 35 miles an hour. At its meeting on Monday night, the Woodland City Council approved a speed limit reduction on a 100-yard stretch of the Lewis River Highway, starting just east of Woodland Intermediate School, going out to Robinson Creek, near the Lewis River Bed and Breakfast. That section of the highway was just recently annexed into the city. City planner Kei Zushi says that dropping the speed limit will help to make the area more pedestrian-friendly, as the number of walkers and bicyclists goes up. Because the road is a state highway, the speed limit reduction also requires approval from the state Department of Transportation..

26/47 Open House--
An open house is planned today down in Banks, as the Oregon Department of Transportation talks about its plans for improving the intersection of Highway 47 and Highway 26, the Sunset Highway. The intersection is commonly called "Staley's Junction," and has long been known as a safety concern. ODOT is proposing a three-phased approach, ending up with a grade-separated interchange that will safely allow turning movements from both roads. Today's open house is set to run from 4 to 7 pm in the Banks Public Library Community Room.

Cold Springs Update--
With the fire now listed at 85 percent containment, the Central Oregon Incident Management Team says that they're getting ready to hand management of the Cold Springs Fire near Mount Adams back to the Forest Service. The latest report shows that the fire has burned just less than eight thousand acres, and has more than one thousand people involved in fighting it. Fire managers say that the fire is now "smoldering and creeping," with isolated incidents of single trees that are torching. Fire crews are continuing to conduct "burnouts," eliminating islands of fuel that might be in the fire's path. They also dealt with a couple of other small fires in other areas around Mount Adams. The Sheep Lake Fire was located on the north side of the mountain, and covered less than an acre. The Big Lava Fire was on the south end of an area known as the Big Lava Bed, and was estimated at 15 acres. Cause of the fires is unknown at this time, and both are under control. Starting on Thursday, mop-up of the main fire will begin, with fire crews working to find smoldering areas and get those put out.

Young Heroes--
Some young heroes were honored at this year's Columbia Emergency Planning Association Expo, conducted during the Columbia County Fair. Back on June Tenth, Jacob Maddux, 10, called 911 when his grandmother seriously injured her hand with a power tool. It's noted that Jacob also provided assistance to his grandmother until paramedics arrived; Jason Maddux, 7, also provided help during the incident. Columbia County 911 Administrator Sally Jones presented the boys with certificates for their bravery, and they were also presented with ride bracelets for the fair. Don and Debbie Courtain and Nathan Helwig were also recognized for their heroism in connection with the recent school bus crash on Highway 30 near Warren.
